Stephen Scarlett retired as a Judge of the Federal Circuit Court on 28 July 2016, having served in that Court and its predecessor, the Federal Magistrates Court, from 19 June 2000.
Previously, he was a Magistrate of the Local Court of New South Wales from 7 November 1988 and the Senior Children’s Magistrate of the Children’s Court of NSW from 1995 until June 2000.
He was a solicitor practising first in Sydney and then in Parkes NSW from 1971 until his appointment to the Local Court in November 1988.
Stephen Scarlett was accredited as a Mediator under the National
Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS) on 2 December 2016 and
conducts mediations regularly, not only in family law matters but also in family provision, commercial and building matters.
He was accredited as an Arbitrator on 2 October 2018 and regularly conducts arbitrations on family law matters. He can be found on the AIFLAM list of arbitrators.
He commenced practice as a barrister on 1 July 2017 and is now at Edmund Barton Chambers in Sydney.
He was appointed a Senior Member of NCAT, the Civil and Administrative Tribunal, in August 2017.
In 2015 Stephen Scarlett was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the Judiciary, to the law and to professional organisations.
